Graduate and Doctoral registrations are generally done for each student through their respective department. In-person registration support is provided by the Registrar's Office, located in the Conlan Center. The final responsibility for meeting all program/degree requirements and being informed of University regulations and procedures rests with the student.

  • Students with a financial hold on their account will be unable to register.
  • Full semester course adds are not allowed after the ninth calendar day of the semester.
  • Students must be registered for a course before attending class or participating in any clinical/rotation, student teaching, or other off-site component of a course.
  • Students who are not registered for classes after the ninth calendar day of the semester will not be permitted to reside in the residence halls. Students may face financial responsibility of residing in residence halls without being registered.

Adding/Dropping/Withdrawing Courses

All course add/drop/withdraws are done through the Mount’s Add/Drop form after the web registration period has closed.

  • Note: A week is defined as Monday through Sunday, 11:59pm. Add/drops/withdraws will be processed based on the date student initiates the request.

Adding courses:

Students must be aware that adding courses may impact financial aid, student billing, athletic eligibility, and progress toward graduation. The responsibility for meeting program and degree requirements, as well as being informed of University regulations and procedures, rests with the student.

  • Any student who does not officially add a class will not receive credit or a grade for the coursework.
  • Students are expected to have met the specific course prerequisites (or the equivalent transfer credit) before adding a class with prerequisites located in the course notes.
  • Students wishing to register for courses that require approval from the instructor or program director (e.g., Co-op, Honors, or Service Learning courses), must obtain the necessary authorization from the instructor or program director before registering.
  • The University reserves the right to monitor the waitlist and register students in the order necessary to fulfill graduation requirements.
  • To add a course after classes have begun, students must complete an add form which must include the instructor’s signature. The completed form must be received by the Registrar’s Office, and will be added based on the date the student submitted the form. Late adds may require a signature from the Provost Office.

Dropping courses:

Students must be aware that dropping courses may impact financial aid, student billing, athletic eligibility, and progress towards graduation. The responsibility for meeting program and degree requirements, as well as understanding University regulations and procedures, rests with the student.

  • Last day to Web drop a full semester and/or first half of the semester course is the Friday after classes start. After this date, a drop form is required. An advisor’s signature is needed to drop a course.
  • It is recommended that students verify their course schedule after any changes to ensure the accuracy of their schedule and transcript.
  • Students who fail to complete a drop or withdrawal process through the appropriate form will receive a grade of FA (failure due to absence).
  • Dropping a course will remove it from the student’s record and transcript.

It is important to note that tuition refund dates and course drop dates are different. Students should consult with Financial Aid to understand how dropping a course may impact financial aid and billing.

Withdrawing from Courses:

Students must be aware that withdrawing from courses may impact financial aid, student billing, athletic eligibility, and progress towards graduation. The responsibility for meeting program and degree requirements, as well as understanding University regulations and procedures, rests with the student.

  • To withdraw from a course, a course withdraw form must be submitted, signed by both the student and the advisor. Withdrawals are not permitted after the withdrawal window has closed.
  • Instructors will assign grades for courses not dropped or withdrawn. If a change in the effective date of withdrawal is needed, the Provost’s Office signature is required on the form.
  • Withdrawing from a course results in a “W” being recorded on the student’s transcript. Withdrawn course hours count in “attempted” hours in both semester and overall total, but do not count as “earned” hours, and therefore do contribute to the degree. Withdrawn grades do not affect the semester or overall GPA.
It is important to note that tuition refund dates and course withdrawal dates are different. Students should consult with Financial Aid to understand how withdrawing from a course may impact financial aid and billing.

Course withdrawal policies:

  • Full semester course:
    • Drop period week 1 through the end of week 5
    • Drop with a W period, begins week 6 and ends the last day of week 14
    • No withdraw period week 14 to last day of finals
  • 6-10 week courses:
    • Drop period is week 1 to end of week 2
    • Drop with a W period begins week 3 and ends the last day of the week before the final week of the subsession. (i.e., 6 week course = W ends the last day of week 5; 7 week course = W ends the last day of week 6, etc.)
    • No drop period: final week of the subsession
  • 5 or fewer week courses:
    • Drop period is week 1
    • Drop with a W begins week 2 and ends the last day of the week before the final week of the subsession (i.e, 5 week course = W ends the last day of week 4).
    • No drop week final week of session

Audit Policy

Courses taken for audit do not earn credit or quality points. Audited courses are assigned a grade of "AU" and cannot be used to fulfill major requirements. Not all courses are available for audit. Students may audit eligible courses on a space-available basis, as determined by the instructor and the department offering the course. There is no limit to the number of courses a student may audit. Auditing a course requires the instructor's signature on the Add form. The conditions and requirements of the audit are set by the instructor or department.

Full-time graduate students (nine or more credit hours) may audit courses at no charge. Other students pay one-half price for audited courses. Alumni of the University from a graduate program may audit courses (except independent studies and online courses) on a space-available basis for a special discounted tuition rate, providing appropriate academic prerequisites have been completed. Lab fees are additional for all students.

To change from audit to graded status (or vice versa) for a full semester course, students must submit the request to the Registrar’s Office by the end of the fifth week of class. For courses less than a full semester, changes must be made before the third face-to-face class meeting or prior to the end of the second week of an online course.

Undergraduate and Graduate Non-Degree Student Registration

Non-Degree students are those taking classes who have not been accepted to the University and are not enrolled in a degree program. Non-degree seeking students do NOT apply through Admission. However, such students must apply and be accepted through the Registrar’s Office by completing the non-degree student pre-registration form available through the Registrar’s Office. Required course prerequisites must be met prior to registration.

Non-degree seeking undergraduate students may take up to 13 hours before obtaining formal admission to the University, and are limited to two courses (six or seven credit hours) per semester or during the entire summer session until reaching the 13 credit hour limit. Non-degree seeking transfer students in good standing from an accredited college or university may take their 13 credit hours in one semester or an entire summer session.

Non-degree seeking graduate students may earn a maximum of nine semester credit hours under a non-degree seeking status.

This policy is implemented at the discretion of the Provost or designee.
