Rebecca Allen, Ph.D., Program Chair

The Department of Computer Science and Mathematics offers a Computer Science major with a choice of concentration in either Social Computing or Application Development.

Social computing is a double major program, designed to infuse technology with another area of study, such as business, art, communication, education or health. Students pursuing social computing must double major in another available bachelor’s degree in order to earn a social computing degree. Many double degree plans do require only four years; students should consult the computer science department for advising to map out their time at the Mount.

In addition to the major, the department offers minors in Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, and Web & Mobile App Development. Students interested in these programs should contact the Department of Computer Science.

Academic Progress and Standing for Computer Science Majors

To ensure timely progress toward graduation, students in the Computer Science major must demonstrate consistent academic performance in required INF, MTH, and NLP courses. The following policy outlines the expectations and consequences related to course performance and degree progress:

  1. Minimum Annual Progress Requirement
Until degree program requirements are fulfilled, students must complete and earn a grade of C or higher in at least one required INF, MTH, or NLP course each academic year to remain in good standing within the program.
    • Students pursuing a double major or experiencing extenuating circumstances may request a one-semester extension, provided they submit a clear, documented plan that demonstrates the degree can still be completed within a reasonable timeframe.
    • The Department Chair must approve this extension in writing.
  2. Consequences for Poor Performance (D, F, or W Grades)
Students earning a grade of D, F, or W in any required INF, MTH, or NLP course will be subject to the following progression of actions:
    • First D, F, or W: Student receives a warning letter from the Department Chair.
    • Second D, F, or W: Student is placed on departmental probation.
    • Third D, F, or W: Student is dismissed from the major.
  3. Dismissal for Lack of Progress
Students who fail to meet the minimum progress requirements (i.e., not completing at least one required course with a C or higher per academic year without an approved extension) may also be dismissed from the program, regardless of the D/F/W count.
